Learning Support

All children are unique and they do not all learn in the same way or at the same rate. For those who require some additional support, we have individual learning programmes which might include in-class support or, if deemed necessary, one-to-one support lessons normally arranged in the mornings while the children are at their most alert. Lessons are rotated to ensure children do not repeatedly miss the same area of the curriculum.

Informal testing is carried out to assess the level of support required and parents are, of course, kept fully informed.

The school also operates a Gifted and Talented policy so that the most able are given every opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Assessment and Observation Information is analysed to identify children who are (or have the potential to be) able in any particular subject area. Once strengths and weaknesses are identified, children can be suitably extended in their strengths and supported with their weakness, through the provision of the most suitable individual learning styles, targeted support, group activities, extra curricular activites and liasion with parents and the child.

Children are encouraged to set their own targets for the development of their learning and thinking skills, and the progress made, in reference to these targets, is carefully monitored.

An major emphasis of our work is to identify children who have the potential to be gifted in certain areas but as yet are not fully able to show that ability through the curriculum. We aim to nurture these children by providing avenues for them to develop their underlying talents and to become responsible for their own learning.
